Interview With Alice Castle

Hi Jodie, it’s lovely to be on your blog today talking about my new book, The Girl in the Gallery.

It’s my second whodunit featuring the determined but accident-prone single mum amateur sleuth, Beth Haldane. Beth lives in Dulwich, a prosperous little oasis in south east London filled with yummy mummies, all driving their precious offspring to ballet classes in cars like tanks. Beth isn’t one of their number – she’s a widow, and despite a new job that’s helped her precarious financial situation, she still thinks hard about how to pay the bills. She doesn’t really need more complications in her life, but she’s the sort of person that things just keep happening to. So when she decides to put off going to work for a half-hour and have a wander around her favourite place, Dulwich Picture Gallery, well, something is bound to go wrong…

Suffice to say Beth soon has a mystery on her hands, and it looks like this one is going to be even harder to solve than her first case. Luckily, she has a cast of useful and not-quite-so-useful characters to help or hinder, including her son, Ben, a bouncy nine-year-old, her cat, Magpie, who is a moggie from Battersea with all the attitude of a Persian, and Detective Inspector Harry York from the Metropolitan Police, whose pragmatic attitude to crime drives Beth mad and spurs her on.

You can read The Girl in the Gallery as a stand-alone story, but of course I heartily recommend reading Death in Dulwich as well. If you loved Motherland and have a sneaking affection for Midsommer Murders, then the London Murder Mystery series is for you. You can buy the books at Village Books in Dulwich Village, Dulwich Books in Croxted Road, Herne Hill Books, Clapham Books and of course the mighty Amazon, via these links: MyBook.to/GirlintheGallery and MyBook.to/1DeathinDulwich.

About the Book

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to Dulwich…

It’s a perfect summer’s morning in the plush south London suburb, and thirty-something Beth Haldane has sneaked off to visit one of her favourite places, the world-famous Picture Gallery.

She’s enjoying a few moments’ respite from juggling her job at prestigious private school Wyatt’s and her role as single mum to little boy Ben, when she stumbles across a shocking new exhibit on display. Before she knows it, she’s in the thick of a fresh, and deeply chilling, investigation.

Who is The Girl in the Gallery? Join Beth in adventure #2 of the London Murder Mystery series as she tries to discover the truth about a secret eating away at the very heart of Dulwich.
